When a wetland is properly functioning, everything is in balance. There aren’t too many nutrients in the water. There is plenty of dissolved oxygen, which allows fish and other aquatic creatures to breathe. Water moves around slowly, and does not stagnate. There are lots of shade trees and shrubs along the shoreline, so summer water temperatures stay cool. In still, unshaded ponds like this one, with very little water movement, dissolved oxygen levels can get very low. So pumping water into the air (using an “aerator” pump) is an elaborate way of keeping a pond healthy.

Lorsqu’une zone humide fonctionne correctement, tout est en équilibre. Il n’y a pas trop de nutriments dans l’eau. Il y a beaucoup d’oxygène dissous, qui permet aux poissons et les autres créatures aquatiques de respirer. L’eau se déplace lentement et ne stagne pas. Le rivage est ombragé par les arbres, donc la température de l’eau pendant l’été reste fraîche. Dans les étangs tranquilles et non ombrés comme celui-ci, qui ont très peu de mouvement de l’eau, les niveaux d’oxygène dissous peuvent devenir très faible. Donc le pompage d’eau dans l’air (en utilisant une pompe “aérateur”) est une façon élaborée de garder l’étang sain.
